Our pets are an integral part of our lives. They are good for our emotional and physical health. Dogs were domesticated between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago. According to Psychology today, dogs likely helped homo-sapiens outcompete Neanderthals. According to Wikipedia cats were domesticated as long ago as 7500BC. Horses were thought to have been domesticated about 2200 years BCE/BC. In other words, humans have had pets for a very long time!
According to the Insurance Information Institute Americans owned an estimated 94 million cats, 90 million dogs, almost 140 million freshwater fish,19 million saltwater fish, 20 million birds, 14 million small animals (not specified), 9 million reptiles and over 7 million horses. YIKES! That's a lot of pets! Between 80% - 95% of pet owners (this number depends on the source) consider their pets part of the family. Some pet owners even spend more on their pet's health care than their own! In 2019 pet owners spent over $75Billion on their pets. The majority of the money was spent on keeping our pets happy and healthy.
Managing our fur babies' health and wellness is a huge responsibility. Keeping track of all the records is difficult enough, but having those records easily available when we travel, move to another location or in an emergency situation is critical.
